Skoda has unveiled its Vision E concept at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, pointing to the Czech brand’s future EV direction.
Like parent company Volkswagen with its I.D. Crozz concept, and the related Audi e-tron Sportback concept, Skoda has wrapped the Vision E in a five-door fastback SUV skin, blurring the lines between family practicality and sporty style.
The Vision E also shares its electric vehicle underpinnings with the I.D. Crozz, with a version of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric platform providing the Vision E’s chassis architecture.
Skoda has also relied on the Volkswagen’s electric drive systems too, with the same 75kW front motor and 150kW rear motor as the I.D. Crozz, resulting in a combined 225kW output.
Power is stored in an 83kWh battery, which Skoda claims is capable of up to 500 kilometres of driving range on a single charge, with a fast charge function to restore 80 percent of battery capacity in as little as 30 minutes.
Skoda has also prepared the Vision E for the autonomous future by including driverless features such as an autopilot function that can drive the vehicle during city traffic and on highways without human input, with the ability to overtake or changing lanes by itself, as well as the ability to scout out and park itself into available parking spaces, thanks to an array of cameras and a variety of sensors.
As is fast becoming the trend with electric vehicles and their reduced cooling needs, Skoda’s exterior design team has deleted the front grille, replacing it with an outline of the brand’s trademark face and creating a new identity through a pair of LED light stips that span the front end.
Inside the Vision E, Skoda has integrated numerous screens in the dash and the back of the rear seats to entertain former drivers and passengers when the car is in autonomous mode.
The Vision E is Skoda’s first step to achieving its plan of offering five different electric vehicles by 2025 and a range of plug-in hybrids from 2019.
