Skoda has given its new mid-sized SUV a name, confirming this week that the new model will be called the Karoq.
Due to be officially unveiled later this month, the Karoq will offer buyers (in Europe at least) a choice of five engines – four of which are new.
Power options include two new petrol engines and two new diesels, alongside one of Skoda’s current diesel-powered offerings. Capacities range from 1.0 to 2.0 litres, and maximum outputs range from 85 to 140kW.
All engines options employ turbocharging along with brake-energy recuperation and stop-start technology, and the 1.5 litre petrol unit also has fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation.
Overseas customers can choose either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG automatic in all but one of the Karoq variants, and all-wheel-drive will be offered on some models.
One such model is the range-topping 2.0 TDI diesel variant, but Skoda will only offer this version with the seven-speed auto.
Drivers can further enhance the SUV experience through a five-option selectable system, which offers Normal, Eco, Individual, Sport and Snow (AWD) modes.
Away from the engine bay, the Karoq will feature full LED headlights (a first for Skoda) and foot-swipe boot opening, while safety features include parking assist, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, sign recognition and Front Assist with predictive pedestrian protection.
Inside, there’s a digital instrument panel, the Skoda Connect infotainment system with touchscreen, Care Connect emergency response (for European customers) and a wireless mobile phone charging compartment which also connects the phone to the vehicle’s roof-mounted antenna.
Styling in these teaser images suggests a significant step away from the lines of the Skoda Yeti, which the Karoq will effectively replace, toward a more ‘conventional’ SUV shape.
The Karoq measures 4832mm long, 1841mm wide and 1605mm high, with a wheelbase measuring 2638mm for front-wheel-drive models and 2630mm for AWD.
Cargo space is rated at 521 litres with the rear seats in place, rising to 1630 litres with the seats folded. With the optional VarioFlex seating removed, the Karoq can become a two-seater van with a cargo area of 1810 litres.
Rumours of a light or compact SUV based on the Skoda Fabia continue, but it is unclear whether the midsized (sharing its footing with the Volkswagen Tiguan) Karoq has become the preferred option or whether it is an additional model. Skoda’s large Kodiaq SUV is already on sale overseas, arriving in Australia very soon.
The 2018 Skoda Karoq will arrive in overseas showrooms from the second half of 2017, while Australian customers will have to wait until midway through next year.
