Renault has denied reports it has been involved in a exhaust emission cheating scandal similar to the one that cost Volkswagen billions of dollars.
The French car maker described a story in France’s Liberation newspaper as “unbalanced” and claimed there is no “defeat device” present in its cars, and that the brand can prove compliance with US emissions requirements.
Renault says it cannot comment on an ongoing investigation into pollution levels in France that allegedly exceed regulatory limits.
According to the reports, investigators from the French Economy Ministry raided Renault’s offices after the Volkswagen ‘dieselgate’ revelations and found, in real-life conditions, two Renault models – the Captur SUV and Clio – had exhaust emissions of NOx which were higher than the legal limit (the Captur by as much as 337 per cent). The Ministry lodged its findings with prosecutors back in November.
While Renault recalled 15,000 cars in 2016 due to excessive exhaust emissions, the company says it is not familiar with the contents of the report and has denied its vehicles were fitted with a Volkswagen-like software system which altered the engines so emissions measured in testing were within the mandated limit.
The reports say Renault’s entire management team is implicated in the investigation.
