Mitsubishi Pajero And iMiEV Recalled For Takata Airbags And Rolling Risk

Mitsubishi has issued recalls for two models in Australia, including another expanded recall for its Takata airbag program.

In its sights this time are the Mitsubishi Pajero, sold between November 2006 and November 2010, along with the iMiEV electric city car, sold March 2010 and May 2013.

As the ongoing Takata saga continues to play out, the Japanese carmaker has been forced to add more than 19,000 to the recall list in Australia.

Vehicles with the offending Takata airbags, including many from Toyota, Honda, Subaru and others, may be carrying a potentially lethal airbag inflator unit.

The unit can absorb moisture over time, and in the event of a collision when the airbag is triggered, the inflator unit can rupture – showering the vehicle’s occupants with metal fragments. As a result, occupants may be seriously injured, or even killed.

Eventually all Takata airbags fitted to vehicles worldwide over many years will likely be replaced, but in this instance, Mitsubishi’s concerns are with the passenger side airbag.

Beside the Takata dramas, the iMiEV is also being recalled for a potential problem with the Improper Cell Motor Unit (CMU).

The unit may miscalculate changes in temperature and voltage of the main traction battery when the vehicle is rolling backwards.

In extreme cases, the vehicle may not accelerate forwards but may instead roll backwards on inclines, posing a potential hazard to occupants and other road users.

Combined, there’s 112 iMiEVs and 19,131 Pajeros on the recall list for Australia.

Mitsubishi will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or phone Mitsubishi Motors Australia on 1300 131 211.
