Honda Announces Pre-Order Program For Civic Type R

Honda has opened the order books for its 2018 Civic Type R, months out from the returning hot hatch’s Australian arrival from the 1st of October.

Set to become one of the most hotly anticipated new cars to go in sale in Australia this year, the Civic Type R last featured in Australian showrooms in 2011. For its return the new Type R will be powered by a 235kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged engine mated to a six-speed manual and front wheel drive.

In response to customer requests to dealers concerning the Type R, Honda Australia has officially opened the order books as interest rises, with engineering evaluation prototypes spotted in Australia spurring on further demand from enthusiasts.

To whet the appetite of enthusiasts Honda has used the new Type R to set the most recent front wheel drive lap record around the Nurburgring, posting a time of 7m43.80s time, eclipsing the time set by the previous model – which wasn’t sold in Australia – by 6.83 seconds.

Honda chassis engineer Ryuichi Kijima, credits the new Type R’s improved stability with helping deliver more confidence in high-speed corners.

“The cornering speed achieved in the new Type R is higher because the car features a wider track and tyres, a longer wheelbase, new multi-link suspension in the rear and optimised aerodynamics that improves stability,” said Kijima.

Standard specification to for Australia is set to include 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with high-performance tyres and four-pot Brembo brakes. Interior features will extend to sports front seats, aluminum pedals and shift knob, leather wrapped steering wheel and red gauges.

Adaptive damper control will allow the Type R to be driven in three modes; comfort, sport (which is the default setting) and a more extreme +R.

From the outside the Civic Type R is unapologetically racey with an outlandish aero kit that incorporates front and side splitters, a rear diffuser, plus vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roofline and a rear wing.

Full local specification and pricing for the Type R is expected closer to its launch date later this year, but it is expected to start from below $50,000 plus on-road costs.
