Haval Confirms Plug-In Hybrid ‘Coupe’ For 2020 Australian Launch

Great Wall Motors’ premium SUV arm, Haval, has confirmed that it will join the likes of Mitsubishi and BMW by offering a plug-in hybrid SUV for sale in Australia.

The new model, to be based off the HB-03 SUV coupe shown recently at the Shanghai Auto Show bears a passing resemblance to the BMW X4, particularly in its swept roofline – not altogether surprising having been designed by Pierre Leclercq, formerly of BMW.

The new fastback SUV will arrive with a name change by the time it reaches production (HB titles are reserved for Haval’s concept cars) and will feature a plug-in hybrid system comprised of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine in concert with an 95kW/278Nm electric motor, which Haval claims will produce more than 200kW and 450Nm.

Official fuel consumption for the hybrid concept is claimed to be as low as 2.1L/100km, with a potential electric range of up to 65 kilometres.

Haval’s current Australian range includes four models ranging from the small H2 SUV up to the seven-seat H9 – with more models on the way, including the possible introduction of the seven-seat medium-sized H7 to slot in alongside the five-seat H6.

“We have been working closely with the product planning team in head office, lining up the best possible product for the Australian market,” said Haval Australia chief marketing officer, Tim Smith.

“We were excited by the preliminary drawings we saw of the coupe concept and the product displayed at Shanghai confirmed this was a vehicle we had to have in our line-up,” he added.
