Ford Mustang Number 00002 Set To Smash Price Records At Indianapolis Auction

Muscle car fans and Ford Mustang enthusiasts are readying for the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis in May when Mustang number 00002 is offered for sale.

Claimed to be the first-ever Mustang hardtop – a pre-production model – the vehicle has been sitting in the Henry Ford Museum and is likely to fetch a new record price when bidding gets underway.

Painted in ‘Caspian Blue’ with a matching blue crinkle vinyl interior, Ford Mustang number 00002 runs the 2.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels via a three-speed (yes, remember those?) transmission.

With just 79kW on-tap and pushing some 1200kgs, performance wasn’t in the league of the more powerful V8 models which followed.

Originally destined for sale in Canada, Mustang number 00002 was mistakenly sent to a dealer in remote Yukon and subsequently had 13 different owners before current owner Bob Fria bought in 1997.

Now restored to its original condition, this beauty will be the focus of attention in Indianapolis.

Expect the price to easily beat the +$500,000 recently paid for a XW Phase II GTHO Falcon here in Australia.
