Reports have emerged suggesting that the all-new 2018 Volkswagen Polo will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and revealing key details of what to expect from the new model.
Britain’s Autocar reports that the new, more dynamically styled light hatch will arrive to tackle mounting pressure from the recently introduced Ford Fiesta, with the Polo adopting a slew of new features and technologies to help it along.
At its core the Polo is expected to shift to the Volkswagen Group’s versatile MQB platform, which also underpins the current Volkswagen Passat and Golf, as well as models from Skoda and Audi, though its introduction on the Polo will be the smallest application of the chassis yet.
Part of the move will see the Polo grow slightly compared to the current model, which will see the new model adopt a wider track, and longer wheelbase to the benefit of interior space.
Upmarket features from Volkswagen’s larger models are expected to trickle down as well, with the latest generation of Volkswagen’s widescreen touch-interface infotainment systems and digital instrument cluster systems to be optionally available.
As with the current model, both three and five-door variants are expected overseas, though the declining popularity of three-door cars in the Australian market means buyers may only be offered the more versatile five-door model.
A more streamlined range is also planned for Europe, adopting the latest generation turbocharged engines as seen in the Golf range, including 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 1.5-litre four-cylinder options in a range of power outputs from 47kW up to 110kW.
Diesel engine will also continue for Europe from launch, with a phase-out program set to see electric and plug-in hybrid eventually take the place of the carry-over diesels, though yet again Australia is likely to pass on diesel power, last seen locally in the Polo range in 2014.
The Polo GTI is expected to take its cues from the larger Golf GTI, using a detuned version of the Golf’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine expected to provide around 150kW of power to the front wheels.
Changes to Volkswagen’s broader product range also see the the SUV-styled CrossPolo, which isn’t offered for sale in Australia, cut from the line-up in favour of a full range based on the T-Cross concept, giving Volkswagen a full model line beneath the Tiguan with which to enter the small SUV category.
Further details of the new Polo are expected to emerge in the lead-up to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with Volkswagen likely to start an official teaser campaign in the weeks leading up to the new model’s reveal.
