2018 LDV D90 Seven-Seat 4WD Spied Testing In Australia

If you doubted LDV‘s commitment to the Australian market, a spy pic of a new large 4WD under test in New South Wales might sway your thinking.

What will eventually amount to China’s answer for the Ford Everest, Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu MU-X and others has been busted while testing in Australia.

LDV has made a name for itself in Australia with competitive and competent commercial vans, and the carmaker is about to expand its local offering with a range of dual-cab utes (called the T60 – pictured, below).

But it’s the company’s upcoming seven-seat SUV that could provide the biggest opportunity yet for the burgeoning brand.

Spotted in Wollongong by an eagle-eyed reader, the camo-cloaked cars are likely to be undergoing validation testing for local conditions and regulations in preparation for a local launch.

Based on the T60, the future large SUV – to be called D90 – will take on similar ute-based 4WD offerings boasting family wagon space and genuine off-road ability.

Previewed by the Maxus D90 concept at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, the styling looks to have been watered down slightly from the sharp lines that dominated the show car, but key features like the headlights, prominent fog lights and large octagonal grille remain.

As the D90 is based on the T60, it should be powered by the same 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 110kW, matched with the choice of either manual or automatic transmissions delivering power to all four wheels.

The T60 dual-cab will also come with a range of safety equipment and driver aids, and LDV hopes the new model will achieve the maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

More details on the D90 are expected once the new 4WD has been fully revealed, potentially as early as next week at the Shanghai Auto Show – stay tuned.
