2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI And Golf R Specs Confirmed For Australia

Mainstream versions of the updated Mark 7.5 Volkswagen Golf are still to arrive in Australia, but hot hatch fans can check out the first details of the Golf GTI and Golf R performance twins that will arrive Down Under.

Visually the changes are subtle, but new front and rear bumpers, and more detailed head and tail lights with new LED accents help pick the 2017 performance Golf range apart, with new alloy wheel designs also available.

The Golf GTI gets a small power bump from the carry-over 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol, now rated at 169kW and 350Nm – the same as the previous Golf GTI Performance – and is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Specifications are set to include a new 8.0-inch touchscreen navigation system, active damper control suspension, multi-mode drive adaptor, 18-inch alloy wheels, plus safety kit incorporating autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue detection, and front and rear parking sensors.

The flagship Golf R also hangs onto its high-output 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with a small power increase to 213kW while torque remains at 380Nm, down slightly on Europe’s more impressive 228kW and 400Nm.

To go with the extra performance over the GTI the Golf R also comes with all wheel drive, and is offered with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Interior tech is bolstered by a 9.2-inch infotainment screen with navigation, plus gesture and voice control, while other standard equipment includes heated front seats, power folding wing mirrors, reversing camera, and adaptive damper control with driving modes, as well as the same safety tech and driver aids found in the GTI.

Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but full details will be announced as the updated Golf range starts to arrive in Australia in June followed by the Golf GTI and Golf R in August.
