2017 Mazda2

Mazda has updated its light-sized Mazda2 for 2017 with a focus on new safety equipment and the introduction of a new range-topping variant.

The Neo, Maxx and Genki remain in the line-up, but the Genki’s place at the top of the tree has been replaced by the new Mazda2 GT.

The GT (pictured) is priced from $21,680 for the six-speed manual model, and switching from hatch to sedan bodies costs no extra.

A six-speed automatic is also available in all models for an additional $2000. Below the new GT, Mazda has retained 2016 pricing for all three existing variants.

As mentioned, the Mazda2 update is optioned with safety top-of-mind and new features include Mazda’s torque-vectoring (called ‘G-Vectoring’) system, suspension tweaks and an easier-to-read head-up display.

Skoda’s Fabia was the only light car to offer standard autonomous emergency braking across the range, but Mazda has now trumped the Fabia with standard AEB that operates in both forward (all models) and reverse (all models except the Neo) directions.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic alert are also standard in the Genki and GT models.

Mazda calls its AEB Smart City Brake Support, and the system can apply the brakes automatically should it foresee a collision and the driver fails to act, at speeds of up to 30km/h.

Away from the safety specs, Mazda has improved the 2’s noise insulation and ride qualities, while also adding new wheel and body paint finishes. There’s also an updated steering wheel and a digital radio in some variants, matched with a shark fin antenna in Genki and GT hatches.

Power continues to come via a 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 79kW/139Nm in the Neo and 81kW/141Nm in all other models. Fuel economy is rated between 4.9 and 5.5 l/100km.
